Problem solving for word problems, requires a clear personal perspective. Students had different approaches to the same problem above (Ears of Corn). Below are three different ways to solve the same problem.
1. Find the Unit Price Student found unit price by dividing $3.50 by 8, and then multiplied by 28. 2. Use a Formula Student cross-multiplied the denominator and numerator and then divided by the other numerator, to find missing denominator. 3. Recognize Fractions as Ratios $3.50 buys 8 ears of corn, you need 24 ears. 28 is 3.5 times 8. Multiply $3.50 by 3.5.
